I've just delivered a second drop of Northside Wheelers hankies

Handkerchiefs are 16" x 16" with zig zag hem and hand embroidered bike in the corner

Both fabrics are really lovely, soft 100% cotton, pre shrunk and perfect to take along on your next ride - there is nothing worse than ridding behind someone clearing out their nose into thin air…

Circle Skirts

I LOVE circle skirts
They are so flattering on almost any body shape
They swish around your legs as you move making it hard not twirl around just a little when you think no one might be watching, and I have found them extremely easy to wear while ridding around on my racer, they stay down over your suspender stockings and fluttering behind you around the sides of the bike in the wind, kind of romantic really.

I have just added a lovely black, red and cream checked skirt to my etsy site, just in time for spring

I will be adding some lighter weight 1/2 circle skirts for the warmer months.  They are quickly approaching with the days getting longer, you can almost smell spring in the air, bulbs are flowering and jasmine will be blooming any day now!

So if you fancy the spring breeze fluttering your skirt hem have a think about at a circle skirt
I can also make these in a particular fabric and colour if you had an image in your head, just email me at: enquiries@byshelleygreen.com

See You in Hell

Tonight we dine in hell, well, Hell of the North anyway

Last year, what was a beer bar, Lambs Go Bar, was renovated to reopen as Hell of the North.  Also the name of the bike race in the north of France from Paris to Roubaix, named for the difficult roads it travels, this bistro/bar has been named for the difficulties faced working on a heritage listed building.

The owners also run the Rose St Market.  Whilst I had a stall there for a period last year jokes were thrown around that in keeping with the tradition of the previous name, Lambs Go Bar, the new bar should carry a name like Pirates Go Arg…  It seems they didn't think so :)

I met my three lovely friends I used to work with for a really fantastic dinner.

Spiced Cider to start although it was a tough choice between that or the buttered rum… next time!

The food is all based around sharing, and has a European style.
We shared a charcuterie plate to start with chicken liver parfait, mixed meats, pork terrin, and so much onion Jam, I LOVE onion jam!

For mains we had slow braised Ox cheek with Celeriac puree, Cassoulet and Mushroom Gnocchi with sides of Potato Dauphin and Brussel sprouts in honey and almonds.  The meat was rich and amazing, the gnocchi was like soft little pillows of potato - just what home made gnocchi should be!  I make it all the time as my grandma did so its a dish I find I am frequently disappointed with, but definitely not this time!

The food is rich so very filling, but even when feeling close to bursting it was so good I could always squeeze in a little more and as always, definitely desert!

We shared a caramel mousse with quince and sorbet and shortbread crumble.
We had no problem finishing it!

I love this place!
Branches scatter the room with little birds sitting amongst them and they have an intimate function room and smoking area - everything has been thought of

I can't wait to walk thru the yellow door again for a night in Hell

White Riot

Last weekend a group of us from the bakery had an all white dinner party.
This came to be as Caroline from the butcher, the baker and the tea towel maker went to a party and no one ate her food!  I have much trouble fathoming this as I'm the first one at the bakery to try and sneak any of the delicious off cuts of baked goods she produces, also making my running and cycling a necessity to prevent me turning into a brownie, cannoli or chocolate and custard brioche (so amazing straight out of the oven)

Sophie and Jeremy were our hosts, we were designated a dish each and emptied our wardrobes for any pieces of white clothing.  I soon realised apart from a few jumpers I really don't own any white, and winter is not the time of year to be wearing a floaty white cotton sun dresses!  So I quickly whipped up a white 1/2 circle skirt and Jill lent me some white stockings, along with my white jumper, white clip on earings and white vintage snow fox fur collar I was set!

Sophie and Jeremy had a very dreamy set up, white lace tablecloth, white candle holders, white flowers and Phileus the Siamese fighting fish to break up the whiteness a little

Phileus

Appetisers were Sophie and Kelly.  Sophie made calamari and fennel salad and tzatziki dip, with lots of Baker de Chirico bread of course.  Kelly brought a fabulous selection of cheese.  Is there anything better than cheese???
Hard goats cheese, cheddar and oven baked Camembert.

Caroline had the main course, roast chicken in a coconut, noodle and enoki mushroom soup, infused with chili, and lime - Yum!
Esther made a delicious salad to accompany with celeriac, fennel and almonds

We can't forget bevrages... we had white wine of course and a 2 ltr bottle of Saki, all of which was consumed.

I had desert so made a cassata, a sponge lined cake filled with mascarpone and ricotta cheese with mixed nuts, fruit and chocolate.  Topped off with white chocolate leaves.

The white party was a definite success!  What colour will be next?  Red, Black, Green……

I am looking forward to the black party though, lots and lots of Guinness!

Pink!

I am not a pink person.
you may find that hard to believe but I don't own a single item of pink clothing.

I have recently purchased a fluro pink cambridge satchel company satchel which matches my bike, but this is an accessory and so does not count!

And so embracing my new found love of the brightest version of this tint of red, when it was time to get the roots on my head bleached again, I thought; why not!?
I have noticed passers by lifting their sun glasses to make sure they are seeing correctly and that its not the tint on their lenses!

This is why:

Keeps life interesting!

Liz and Luke's Engagement

The sun came out on Sunday to help us celebrate the engagement of the lovely couple and dear friends Liz and Luke
Wishing them both every happiness for their future together, I hope it is filled with many adventures and good times

To match Liz's (who looked stunning) beautiful black and cream dress I made her a silk rose with freshwater pearls, glass crystals and veiling

The lovely couple

It was also really nice to catch up with some people i haven't seen in quite a while.  Everyone has so much on that life really does get in the way sometimes, I'm grateful for such lovely events as this to give us a chance to forget about everything going on and enjoying each others company, meet new people and have a laugh

Mauve and gold hearts                                               The girls

Liz the cupcakes were divine!  Everything looked beautiful and The Bay Hotel in Mordialoc was the perfect venue.

Being such a beautiful day I though I would take advantage of the weather and ride my liddl'ol fluro pink bike down.  I've had this bike since my Dad bought it for me when I was 12 and recently re vamped it a little getting it shiny black mud guards, matching black handle bar tape and seat, and as I don't own another single item of pink anything I went out to Cottage Industries on Gertrude St in Fitzroy and got myself an amazingly luminous fluro Pink Cambridge Satchel Company satchel.
And I do mean luminous!

By the time I rode home the sun was well and truly on its way over the horizon but just as well I had the brightest bike lights I've ever seen with me and no more batteries, they charge in your laptop, Knog Blinders.  Picked them up from Northside Wheelers in Prahran.  I have mentioned this really cute shop previously, they also just received in some unique printed t-shirts from the US of A as well as some shop branded T's based on the book the Rider, really soft cotton, fantastic coloured print and with a back pocket for those small valuables when out on your bike or off for a run.

Why not brighten someones winters day with a little touch of fluro

A top hat is always somewhat extraordinary, of course!

Bring back top hats I say!
I went to the Espy last Friday to see a friends band, The Happy Endings play their last gig in Melbourne before their tour around some of Easton Europe, enjoy the sunshine boys
Following this was Dirt River Radio, with the most perfectly polished quiff I have seen in a long time!  There was a great crowd with a lot of foot tapping and a bit of a sing along

Dirt River Radio and the perfectly polished quiff
The Hellhounds, rock'n the espy with a top hat
Last on for the night was the Hellhounds with their style of Retro Blues Rock, and the most amazingest top hat!
I love to see hats being worn and worn well, but its been a while since I've seen a top hat out and about.  And this was done with extraordinary style.  The band were fantastic too, I'm not usually a big dancer, normally preferring to remain around the edges unless a large crowd is in attendance to blend amongst… I did however find myself displaying more than just a slight shake of my behind
Needless to say I bought their album from itunes the next day and have been enjoying it daily since.

We also had to pop our heads into the beautiful Gershwin room to check out the Bon Jovi tribute band.
Hilarious!
No offence to you Bon Jovi fans, we toned down our giggling after a few threatening looks from the die hard followers in front of the stage :)

One of the Radio Mexico cacti
Also making this icy winter weather warm and cosy, and I do mean icy ( I have learned my lesson about not wearing gloves while ridding around at 5.30 in the morning, the chilblains on my fingers are still going down! ouch!) is the new restaurant on Carlisle St, Radio Mexico.
Next door to the Galleon this little Mexican place is packed any night of the week.  Inside is warm and cosy but if you can only get a possi outside there's an open fire and blankets to snuggle under, rather romantic.
The taco's are a winner at $6 each, my favourites are the slow cooked pork and bean and the spicy pumpkin.  They come out of their own little taco truck like kitchen so the wait isn't long and you can order them as you go.
My friend Lib swears by the pork belly and the traditional style nachos are delicious!
Whilst coffee isn't yet available the spicy hot chocolate is a must, the thick, chocolaty goodness is well worth the $10 price tag.
I will be making many more visits thats for sure!

Don't forget to wear your gloves!!!

To Market We Go

I had a stall this weekend just gone at the always lovely Rose St Artists Market.
This is one of my favourite places to be on a weekend.
Fantastic coffee, delicious food, an amazing array of original handmade wears and a beautiful community of friendly and inviting stall holders and organisers.

If in Melbourne or visiting get down one weekend to support these hard working artists

Thankyou to everyone that popped in to say 'hi' and to those who purchased pieces, I hope you love wearing them and they give you as much happiness as they gave me making them
And thankyou to the rain for staying away!

Here's a few photos from the weekend

A stitch in time….

A little more embroidery
This time to hide a patched up hole on a really lovely merino wool cycling jersey

Just because you have a hole in that jumper or cardi don't throw it away… the possibilities can be endless!
And the result can look quite classy if I do say so

A bit of customisation in chain stitch

Goodbye 20's, Hello 30's

On Sunday I closed the door on the decade that was my 20's and stepped thru to start my 30's
My dirty 30's so I keep being told…

To celebrate I had dinner and drinks with my nearest and dearest at the Gem in Collingwood

Amazing pub food!

Thankyou to my lovely friends for making it such a fantastic night!  Was so nice to share the occasion with you all

Mussels

Saganaki and Buttermilk Chicken

Fish n Chips

Wagu Cheeseburger with onion rings and fries

As the night winds up
If you find yourself north of the river I cannot recommend the Gem highly enough for a meal.  If going on a night with a band get there early as it can get pretty packed.

Sunday my sister and her boyfriend made me an amazing birthday lunch, including a most delicious caramelised shallot tart tartan, ragu and her famous checkerboard cake

Birthday Roses

Desert selection
And what is a birthday without presents!
Thanks Mum and Dad for yet another pair of fabulous brogues
